Victorian Trunks

Tuesday, March 24th, 2009

Trunks and steamers that were manufactured and were fashionably popular during the years from 1837 - 1901 are generally referred to as Victorian trunks. These trunks will also inevitably be referred to under other names, most commonly as the style of trunk or by the manufacturer of the trunk.

Victorian trunks are merely representative of the times in which they came into fashion and were commonly used. Victorian trunks can be categorized to make it easier to search as either steamers or non-steamers, although there are many types and styles to choose from.

Victorian Steamers

Flat topped steamers began to appear in the 1870s and were found in greater numbers in the early 1900s until around the 1920s. These steamer trunks were favored because they were able to be easily stacked on top of one antoher and stored in the ship's hold.

Victorian Cabin Trunks

Another popular type of trunk was the cabin trunk which was a trunk that was smaller in height to a normal steamer and was carried onto the ship by the owner. It was low enough to fit under the berth in the cabin of the ship or on a train, giving it its name.

Travel during the 1800s generally meant a lot of time on the road or sea and so the travelling trunk was an essential part of the luggage. Trunks were used to store all manner of personal items including clothes and equipment. During this time the manufacture of trunks developed from being merely a box into which everything was thrust to becoming an entire wardrobe including drawers and hanging space.

Some of the well known and respected trunk manufacturers of the time included Harry Bender, Louis Vuitton, Henry Likly & Co.

Victorian trunks are only a small part of the range of Trunks and Chests available here.
