Cedar Hope Chest

The Hope Chest is a tradition that has gone back many years and across many cultures. As a girl neared marriagable age she was presented with a box, often because when she was married she would be leaving home and would need some kind of luggage. The cedar hope chest filled that role. Hope chests come in many finishes but one of the more traditional is the cedar hope chest.

Cedar hope chests can be highly decorative pieces or can be understated with a more plain box appealing to a growing number of people. Another name for it is a glory box.

A typical hope chest would have small compartments so that the items stored in it can be divided into their various uses. They often also come with a small tray drawer down the bottom so that smaller valuables could be easily stored and later found.

Because a lot of the items that are stored in these hope chests are materials such as manchester and the like, the use of cedar was necessary for the moth-repelling qualities the wood has. When storing materials for a long time it was necessary to ensure that the contents were not destroyed when it came time to use them.
