The types of dresser trunks that are the most desirable are those that still have all of their drawers and the lids and trays are present and are still in good working order. Most dresser trunks were made with flat tops due to the working nature of the way in which they presented the inner hardware. However there are also examples of round topped dresser trunks available.
Dresser trunks didn’t only contain drawers and trays inside. Some of them, when opened, reveal desks with fold down front sections.
Well known manufacturers of dresser trunks included F. A. Stallman and Homer Young & Co both of whom made dresser trunks that are beautiful works that will be rewarding to track down.
Stallman Trunks
One of the most prominent manufacturers of quality dresser trunks was F.A. Stallman of Columbus Ohio. The theatrical Stallman trunks that were produced in the late 1800s and early 1900s were popularly used by performers of the time and were seen in many dressing rooms in theatres around the country.
Stallman trunks were usually made to be very strong and had heavy duty hardware to stand up to the daily and nightly rigors that came with an actively touring player. Within these wardrobe or dresser trunks were drawers and individual compartments to store all of the clothing and paraphernalia typically required by someone who was using it as a portable dressing room.
When buying a good quality dresser trunk such as a Hartman trunk it is very important that you take a look at the interior because this is where all of the magic takes place. The number of drawers and the way they slide is very important to the trunk’s operation. The lining of the trunk’s interior is also going to have a huge effect on the look and value of the trunk.
It is still possible to find examples of an old Stallman trunk although they are very likely going to be in a condition that might best be described as shabby. This shouldn’t mean the trunk should be dismissed because, in a lot of cases, even though the exterior might have been knocked around, there is a very good chance that the interior is as flashy and well preserved as when it was in constant use. There is definitely some potential profit to be made in finding a cheap old Stallman theatrical trunk or dresser trunk. Homer Young Trunks
The Homer Young Co. Was another maker of fine dresser trunks and this company was also based in Ohio, in this case in Toledo. The company specialized in wall trunks as well as dresser trunks and the emphasis was on the quality of the appearance of the trunk as well as the versatility it offered the owner.
Many of these trunks opened from the front bottom with the hinges located on the rear top. This meant that when the trunk was opened it would form a display where the drawers and shelves were set out diagonally. The result was a dressing table appearance that would allow the owner to get themselves ready at their trunk.
