Gothic trunks were commonly used around the late 18th century to early 19th century, the time of the Gothic Revival, and range in appearance from the very plain looking English Gothic to the much more ornate French Gothic. The Gothic style is elaborate, ornamental and pleasing to the eye and the trunks often feature intricate carved inlaid work on the sides that makes them superb showpieces.

The carving that goes into many gothic trunks look very much like the gothic architecture that was built at around the same time so placing one in a room in the house will definitely give you a talking point, not to mention an eye-catching piece of art.

Gothic trunks may also be known by the term cassone which is the Italian equivalent and refers to elaborately decorated chests that are used as pieces of furniture. These types of gothic trunks are highly collectable objects for the detail that has gone into their construction.

Cassone chests are less common than other types of trunks and so will not come up for sale quite as frequently. It would be a good idea to check back every so often to check when a new item has been added. Their beauty and appeal makes checking them out worthwhile.

Italian cassones are beautiful pieces that are functional as items of furniture as well as showcasing remarkable artistic beauty and design. They are pieces that are to be treasured.
