Oshkosh Trunks

The Oshkosh Trunk Company was established in 1902 in Oshkosh, Wisconsin and exclusively made trunks until 1927 and made them so well they became one of the leading trunk makers in the country. In 1939 the company was sold to The Plotkin Brothers of Chicago and the name of the company was changed to Oshkosh Trunks and Luggage. The company continued to manufacture luggage until it went out of business in 1962.

The reason why Oshkosh trunks developed into a market leader can be seen today in the number of trunks that are still available today. The workmanship and durability of the trunks has ensured that many of them still look attractive and almost as good as new. That quality can still be seen when you browse through the Oshkosh wardrobe trunks on offer for sale.

The top of the range Oshkosh trunk was The Chief and it can be identified by an exterior made from beige duck cloth with red and yellow stripes.

Just in case you feel that Oshkosh trunks cost too much you should be aware that even back in 1926 the company proclaimed in its own advertisements that ‘Oshkosh trunks are rather expensive’.

The company made a range of wardrobe trunks that varied in size from 9 x 20 x 28 inches to 28 x 29 x 43 inches. The interior of the Oshkosh trunks differed from trunk to trunk in much the way one wardrobe design is different to the next. Some trunks consisted entirely of drawers while others contained hanging room only or a combination of drawer space and hanging space. Shoe box and hat compartments were also commonly provided in these trunks.
