A Brief Background of the Ed Roos Company
The Roos Manufacturing Co. of Chicago was established by Edward Roos with the company responsible for the creation of a number of different homewares items such as curtain rods. The manufacture of fine cedar chests also became a specialty of the company and they were made at least until 1920 until which time it appears the chests were made by the Ed Roos Company of Forest Park.
Edward Roos died in 1906 and the original Roos Manufacturing Co. was taken over by his son Otto. In 1916 another company, Ed Roos Company of Forest Park was also established. This company was founded by Edward’s other son, Edward Jr. The new company also made cedar chests under the name Roos Chests but the two companies are different. The most likely type of Roos chest that will be available today will be a chest made by the Ed Roos Company with the chests made during the period 1916 to 1951.
The original Roos Chests bear the logo stamp featuring a rooster stating Original Roos Manufacturing Co. Chicago. The logo of the second company features a tree surrounded by a circle stating Roos Chests Forest Park Ill.
Although Roos cedar chests are not necessarily rare they are very stylish and representative of the wonderful art deco style that was in vogue at the time.
