For the most part, wardrobe trunks when opened revel a set of drawers on one side of the trunk and room for hanging clothes, complete with clothes hangers, on the other. Specific places to store items such as shoes, buckles, belts and jewelry were found in the higher end of the market, not to mention mirrors and privacy curtains.

Some wardrobe trunks even came with ironing boards to help the traveler to look as fresh as a daisy each day.

In many cases wardrobe trunks are magnificent pieces of work, particularly the Cedarobe trunks that were made by the Whittle Trunk & Bag Co. Others such as the Wheary Wardrolette were more practical in nature and did not come with the luxurious features of the more upscale models. These trunks were the kind of luggage that traveling salesmen may have commonly used.

Some wardrobe trunks simply resemble oversized suitcases but they are extremely useful for storing and transporting large amounts of clothing items. Many wardrobe trunks could also be seen to be large versions of steamer trunks.
